- Abstract
- The prediction of wheel-soil interaction for off-road vehicles traversing soft, mostly unsaturated terrain is the prime concern in mobility. Through simple and portable in-situ testing devices have been adopted for such purposes, their prediction capabilities are limited due to the inability of providing a representative stress-strain behaviour of the supporting soil. In this study, appropriate stress-strain relationships of the soil can be derived by the proposed mathematical model with input data provided by penetration and torsion tests with either cone and vane or vane-cone field devices. A laboratory experimental program was designed to 1) provide reproduceable samples, 2) determine soil physical and engineeering properties, 3) perform penetration and torsion tests with cone, vane and vane-cone, and 4) perform model-footing tests. This experimental program also investigated tip-size and strain-rate effects, amongst others, on soil-resistance measurement.
