PHM HULLBORNE WAVE-INDUCED MOTIONS, A COMPARISON OF PREDICTIONS WITH MODEL TEST MEASUREMENTS

Abstract
Predictions of hullborne wave-induced motions for the PHM hydrofoil craft are compared with model test measurements in sea states 3 and 5. Agreement is satisfactory, both for pitch and heave in head seas and for roll, sway, and yaw in beam seas. Hull exciting forces, added mass, and damping are computed by the usual means of strip theory, and upon these are superposed linearized hydrofoil terms derived by incorporating Theodorsen's unsteadiness effects into a three-dimensional quasi-steady formulation. The results suggest that pitch and heave may be predicted with roughly the same accuracy for hullborne hydrofoils as for conventional displacement hulls.
