Abstract
During sea trials of the Electronic Chart Display and Information System (ECDIS), issues concerning colour calibration and colour coding of the display were investigated. As part of the provisional standards for ECDIS, this report outlines a step by step colour calibration procedure to ensure accurate colour production. A recalibration procedure based on a simple method introduced by Lucassen and Walraven is also included to compensate for colour and luminance shifts following initial calibration. Some human factors issues that will affect the performance of the colour display are discussed and adjustment of the colour specifications are recommended.
