SIDE-SCAN SONAR MEASUREMENTS OF THE TARGET STRENGTHS OF CONCRETE CYLINDERS ON THE SEA BOTTOM

Abstract
The target strengths of cylinders were measured in a setting similar to mine hunting, as distinct from well controlled laboratory-like circumstances. Vertical and horizontal concrete cylinders deployed on the sea bottom were imaged with a commercial side-scan sonar from many directions. It was found that the target strengths of the vertical cylinders could be described by theory based on isotropic scattering. Horizontal cylinders, however, had higher target strengths than predicted by this theory, and this difference was likely due to multiple paths which included the bottom.
