OBSERVATIONS ON THE VISIBLE EMISSION FROM ELECTRONICALLY EXCITED CS2

Abstract
A detailed study has been made of the CS2 afterglow emission observed when either pure CS2 or a CS2-Ar mixture is passed through a microwave discharge or when CS2 is introduced into a stream of discharged argon or active nitrogen. The emission is continuous and extends from 340 nm to 640 nm with a maximum at 440 nm. It is possible to correlate this emission with the (3A2) electronic state of CS2 previously observed in absorption and in shock-heated CS2-Ar mixtures.
