Abstract
The paper traces the origins of the Kashmir dispute from the period before the partition of the Indian subcontinent to the current situation. The intractable nature of this dispute is the direct consequence of historically-derived perceptions and underlying hostility which continue to characterize Indo-Pakistani relations. The unwillingness or inability of these two states to resolve this dispute will result in continuing war and strife in Kashmir for the foreseeable future.
