Abstract
The document is a discussion paper in the series of reports of the study on Technology Trends, Threats and Opportunities (T3O). Whereas the title is fairly explicit, particularly within a defence context such as this, it may require some elaboration in order to relate it to the substance of the project itself. The "Futures Perspective" in the title may also require some explanation. A popular myth is that futurists are in the business of predicting the future. This is in fact not so; as most futurists themselves know and freely admit, the future is largely unknowable, i.e. it is not "predictable" in a scientific sense. Instead, what good futurists do is to create scenarios based on investigation and scholarly research suggesting things which might happen and events which might take place given specific assumptions. The study of current trends may enable us to make projections of reasonable scenarios for the future. TRUNCATED
