Abstract
Rowan Williams Davies & Irwin Inc. (RWDI) was retained by the Department of National Defence to manage an ambient air quality monitoring program in support of PROJECT SWIFTSURE. PROJECT SWIFTSURE was a program undertaken at the Defence Research Establishment Suffield (DRES) to neutralize and destroy chemical agent wastes and incinerate contaminated scrap metal and non-hazardous scraps from DRES. Although the incinerator was designed to be highly efficient and representative of the best available technology, it was recognized that no system is 100% efficient, and therefore, some discharge of contaminants to the environment would occur. Ambient monitoring was undertaken to ensure that these discharges were not hazardous to human health or the natural environment and these concentrations were within standards set by Environment Canada and Alberta Environment.
