Abstract
Hagedorn oximes are a family of pyridinium-2-carboximes which are linked to the nitrogen atom of a second pyridinium ring by a dimethyl ether bridge. Symmetrical oximes, such as 1, have been prepared by heating an ethanolic solution of pyridine-2-carboxime (2) and bis(chloromethyl) ether. Unsymmetrical oximes (eg. 5) can be prepared by using two different pyridines in the reaction, although a mixture of the three possible products results and the desired oxime must be isolated.
