THE MODELLING OF SHOCK INITIATION OF DETONATION IN HIGH EXPLOSIVES USING THE EPIC 2 HYDROCODE WITH FOREST FIRE MODEL

Abstract
In the design and evaluation of high-explosive warheads, as well as in the assessment of their vulnerability and safety, computer simulations with hydrocodes can play a key role. A description of the initiation and the build-up of the detonation is often required to obtain reliable results. To this end, a shock-initiation model was incorporated into the EPIC 2 hydrocode in use at DRES. Calculations with this model, called Forest Fire, were carried out to investigate whether a number of experimental results could be reproduced. these concerned one- as well as two-dimenstional experiments. Also, calculations were carried out demonstrating the possibilities of using hydrocodes containing an initiation model in the design of a warhead.
