SOME CONSIDERATIONS ON THE USE OF SONIC DETECTORS FOR THE MEASUREMENT OF PROJECTILE VELOCITY

Abstract
Although a supersonic projectile velocity measuring system employing sonic detectors may look very attractive, for it is nearly independent of environmental conditions, this Note shows that the influence of the alignment of these detectors on the measurement accuracy may limit their use considerably. The measurement error resulting from the misalignment of the detectors relative to the projectile's trajectory is theoretically derived, and maximum accuracy obtainable from a system aligned with the aid of surveying instruments was established from a series of field trials.
