HIGH SENSITIVITY COLOR SCHLIEREN PHOTOGRAPHY OF HYPERVELOCITY MODELS AT DREV HYPERSONIC RANGE 5

Abstract
Because there exists a wide range of density gradients in the flow field of a hypervelocity model, the black and white schlieren method is often saturated. Attempts to minimize this effect led to experiments on a color schlieren technique that was as sensitive as the DREV black and white schlieren system, yet could not be as easily saturated. It was decided to apply the technique over one of the black and white schlieren stations. This note deals with the construction of a color filter, the configuration of which was slightly altered to better suit the available equipment. This led to the design of a double point light source spark gap of short duration. It has been possible with the above modifications to take short exposure (0.5 microsecond) color schlieren transparencies that showed the density gradients in the flow field of hypervelocity models at pressures as low as 1.1 torr.
