USE OF TWO-DIMENSIONAL DIGITAL FOURIER TRANSFORMS FOR IMAGE PROCESSING AND ANALYSIS

Abstract
An interactive image processing system based on a hybrid computer is described and is used to investigate image analysis, enhancement and restoration techniques using the two-dimensional digital Fourier transform. Properties of Fourier transformed displays are examined with particular regard to use of the two-dimensional phase spectrum. Directional filters are used to remove certain features from infrared aerial photographs to enhance other structure. Simulated and experimental sonargrams are processed to enhance line components within a given angular range of the time axis. Images degraded by simulated time-average transmission through atmospheric turbulence (gaussian resolution function) followed by the addition of random noise are restored according to a conventional and an adaptive least-mean-square error criterion.
