Abstract
A CO2 oscillator-amplifier laser system generating short pulses of radiation in the gigawatt range is described. Emphasis is laid upon self-oscillation problems associated with high gain amplifier chain. The insertion of SF6, freon and C2H5OH cells between the amplifier modules is found efficient in suppressing any oscillation in the presence of a polyethylene target. The characteristics of the output radiation are given together with the reflection measurements of the target during the interaction with the laser pulse.
