Abstract
A CO2 oscillator-amplifier laser system generating short pulses of radiation in the gigawatt range is described. Emphasis is laid upon self-oscillation problems associated with a high-gain amplifier chain. The insertion of SF6, Freon, and C2H5OH cells between the amplifier modules is found efficient in suppressing any oscillation in the presence of a polyethylene target. The characteristics of the output radiation are given together with the reflection measurements of the target during the interaction with the laser pulse.
