Abstract
As part of the feasibility study on an Information Analysis Centre for Low Intensity Conflict (LIC), the Defence Scientific Information Service collected relevant LIC material from a wide range of standard publications. Since the range of indexing terms in TEST and in the list of DSIS descriptors did not always allow an adequate description of the subject material, a "working list" was gradually developed by the addition of new terms as they were required. The paper describes the attempt to transform the word list into a controlled vocabulary of about 1000 terms for use in indexing and retrieving information in the LIC subject areas.
