A MODEL OF LOCAL MUSCULAR FATIGUE DURING DYNAMIC EXERCISE

Abstract
A data acquisition system has been assembled to study the relationship between force and EMG in vastus lateralis during cycling exercise. The system is run by a computer that regulates a high-speed, multichannel analogue-to-digital converter that samples force, position and velocity transducers mounted on a modified cycle ergometer and from surface EMG electrodes placed over the vastus lateralis muscle of both legs. The model has been tested under a variety of exercise conditions and found to have stable and repeatable characteristics. It can be used to study how the CNS operates muscle in the face of changes prompted by fatigue, alterations in contraction velocity, the effects of training or the influence of ergogenic aids.
