Abstract
The complement activation resulting from the incubation of rabbit plasma or serum with air bubbles has been measured. It has been found that if the complement system of an individual rabbit is sufficiently sensitive to activation by incubation with zymosan, then it is also sensitive to activation by the presence of air bubbles. Approximately 50% of those rabbits examined demonstrated this sensitivity. These observations provide an explanation for many of the characteristics of decompression sickness.
