BALLISTIC EVALUATION OF MATERIALS FOR ARMOUR PENETRATORS

Abstract
In this report results are presented for a tangent-ogive penetrator fired against a semi-infinite target as a sorting test for a variety of potential materials. These materials include a number of uranium alloys which have been studied over the past few years. The alloys selected were heat- treated to exhibit extremes in hardness and ductility and thus to emphasize the effect of these metallurgical variables on penetrator response. Other materials tested for comparison included such standard materials as tungsten carbide and tungsten alloy.
