Abstract
The paper contains a description of the mechanical engineering aspects of the DREO optical recorder for SEASAT. The concept, design and construction are discussed in detail. The device receives a signal from the satellite and converts it into an intensity modulated line on an oscilloscope. This line is focused by a lens system on to a moving film. The motion of the film allows an image to build up. The speed and tension of the film are controlled by servomotors. The recorder functioned will and produced valuable information before the failure of SEASAT.
