Abstract
A visual, sonar display simulation system was developed which allowed two generic sonar tasks to be conducted under control of variables such as target and noise line frequency. Task one simulated target classification on a single beam (SB), whereby subjects were required to find four related target frequency components, among a large number of target and noise lines, in order to make a target classification decision. Task two resembled a search summary format (SS) using multiple beams, in which the subject was required to determine relationships between pairs of lines (among noise lines) to categorise targets into surface or sub-surface vessels. The tasks could be run independently or in dual task format: the major independent variable was the rate of target and noise lines in each task window. Four experiments were conducted over a period of about three months, using subjects between the ages of 17 and 35 years. TRUNCATED
