Abstract
A simple device has been designed and constructed for determining the direction and yield of a nuclear explosion. Apertures in the metal container limit the incident thermal energy with the result that a hole is melted into the block of expanded polystrene foam inside. The depth of the hold and its position relative to the aperture enable the thermal energy flux and the direction to the point of burst to be obtained. Information from more than one such device may be used to obtain the yield and position of burst. Maximum sensitivity is about 0.5 cal/square cm/sec. Field test behaviour was satisfactory with an energy accuracy of about 30%.
