Abstract
The opening mode displacements of crack surfaces near the crack tip in symmetrically edge-notched plates were measured and compared to predictions based on the elastic displacement field equation. The primary purpose of the study was the development of a technique for quantitative measurement of elastic-plastic behavior at the crack tip. The technique appears to provide a sensitive method for the investigation of deviation from elastic response and has potential as an approach for the determination of the stress intensity relationships.
