A TECHNIQUE FOR THE CONTINUOUS MEASUREMENT OF STRESS CORROSION CRACKING RATES

Abstract
A sensitive method for measurement of crack opening displacements developed at DREV was applied to the determination of stress corrosion cracking rates in a high strength steel. The technique involves mechanical measurement of the change in separation of the notch surfaces close to the propagating crack tip. This separation is related to change in crack length by direct calibration or by employing the elastic displacement field equation. The same equations were used to determine the stress intensity acting at the crack tip.
