Abstract
An amino acid analyzer was purchased from Technicon for use in studying the radiation chemistry of cystine. This paper describes: (a) a modification used to obtain an even flow, and (b) the use of columns of Dowex 1 anion-exchange resin with the analyzer. In studying the gamma radiolysis of cystine in dilute aqueous solutions at low doses, it was necessary to measure small changes in the cystine concentration and also the yields of the products in the presence of excess cystine. The main products, cysteine sulfinic acid and cysteic acid came off in narrow bands giving sharp peaks and could be determined with an accuracy of + or - 1% even with concentrations of 4 mu M/litre.
