Abstract
Fifty years ago, in 1939, with the pressures of impending war, the recognition of the importance of aviation medicine to defence led to the establishment of an interdepartmental committee, the Associate Committee on Aviation Medical Research. This Committee, set up by the Department of National Defence, with Sir Frederick Banting of the University of Toronto as the Chairman, held is first meeting in June, 1939, and was basically the embryo of our present Institute and the current effort on human factors research in military environments.
