Abstract
Amine sensitizers, concentration of reagents, order and time of addition of reagents, and effect of light, pH, common ions and time on colour development were investigated. The most suitable sensitizer of those investigated is N,N-diethyl-p-phenylene diamine hydrochloride. The only ions having a significant effect on the reaction are magnesium and lead. Because of the slow rate of colour development and the insensitivity of the reaction attempts to adopt the procedure to a field method of detection were unsuccessful.
