Abstract
Twenty-three substrains representing colonial variants of 11 strains of Actinobacillus mallei were examined for their ability to attack carbohydrates. The emphasis has been primarily on establishing whether the 10 carbohydrates included (glucose, galactose, mannose, trehalose, fructose, arabinose, xylose, lactose, sucrose, and maltose) could be utilized by this organism, and on devising cultural conditions which would permit demonstration of this ability in a reasonably short incubation period.
