THE EFFECT OF LOW TEMPERATURES ON FACEPIECE TYPE COMPOUNDS

Abstract
Using hardness values as a measure of the effect of low temperature, Natural Rubber and Butadiene/Styrene facepiece type compounds have been evaluated at -26C and -40C. The exposure period was 28 days and the effect is very pronounced on some of the compounds. On others there is no progressive stiffening after the initial increase due to the lowering of the temperature. With correct compounding both Natural Rubber and Butadiene/Styrene compounds can be obtained which remain flexible at these temperatures.
