A PORTABLE GAMMA SURVEY METER USING AN UNSATURATED ION CHAMBER

Abstract
The design and performance of a survey meter which covers the range 0.5 to 500 r/hr on a single scale and will operate over the temperature range from 125F down to -65F with its batteries in situ is described. The variation in chamber current with temperature is partially compensated for by the negative temperature coefficient of the load resistor. The unsaturated ion chamber with a cathode follower electrometer amplifier provides a very stable instrument which comes close to meeting the Canadian Tri-Service requirements for a high range survey meter and can also be applied to other fields of radiation measurement.
