ENVELOPE AND INSTANTANEOUS FREQUENCY ESTIMATION OF NARROWBAND MODULATED SIGNALS

Abstract
Discusses the implementation of a digital algorithm for signal envelope and instantaneous frequency estimation. The modulation types involved are the following ones: amplitude modulation (AM), frequency modulation (FM), single side band-suppressed carrier (SSB-SC), on-off keying or amplitude shift keying (OOK or ASK), frequency shift keying (FSK), and binary phase shift keying (BPSK). The outputs of the envelopedetector and frequency discriminator are presented for two types of signal: noisy (signal-to-noise ratio, SNR=25 dB) and very noisy (SNR=5 dB). It appears that the output of the FM discriminator contains numerous click-noise spikes when the signal is very noisy, and it is difficult to distinguish among the modulation types.
