Abstract
Establishes, for the first time, the dispersion in characteristic impedance in microstrip as a direct consequence of the dispersion in the phase velocity. The derivation is based on an apparent change in the relative dielectric constant of the embedding medium. The closed-form model strongly supports Jansen's analysis but is much simpler than Jansen's model, for implementation on a pocket calculator.
