AN ELASTIC ANALYSIS OF THE DEFORMATION OF ROUGH SPHERES, ROUGH CYLINDERS AND ROUGH ANNULI IN CONTACT

Abstract
The solutions for contact between specific rough and curved bodies are formulated based on the assumptions that the deformations of the surface roughness and waviness are fully plastic and elastic respectively, and that the roughness height distribution is Gaussian. Utilization of this model establishes a relationship between the applied load, mechanical and surface properties of the materials and the size of the effective contact region. The size of the effective contact region is shown to depend uniquely on the hardness number and the load number both of which are related to the modulus of the elasticity, Poisson's ratio and surface parameters of the specimens.
