Abstract
This report is a study of the operational characteristics of a vacuum-wiped film evaporator used to remove the solvent 1,2-epoxy-butane from a hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene polymer. A purified material containing less than 0.02 percent of solvent was produced at the rate of 20 pounds per hour. Because the time of contact between the 1.0 square foot heating surface and the polymer to be treated was only about one minute, the possibility of chemical degradation was considerably reduced. Overall heat transfer coefficients up to 300 BTU/hr/square ft/degrees F were obtained.
