- Abstract
- The relative cost and operational impact data of aircraft subsystems is discussed. The aircraft data is considered under four major subsystem divisions which are: avionics, propulsion, weapons, and airframe and other components. The study presents both civilian and military operational data and military only cost data. Research was conducted on seven military aircraft types and four civilian aircraft versions for this study. Operational impact/reliability assessment is based on DND flight safety accidents and incidents and on Transport Canada service difficulty occurrences for civilian aircraft. Cost/reliability data for military aircraft subsystems is based on fleet support cost data obtained primarily from Chief of Supply personnel and records, and correlated with Canadian Forces Cost Factors Manual data. The study represents a first step in an attempt to identify the major factors affecting opertional reliability and cost of ownership of typical air weapons platforms.
