CRACKING IN DE-SUPERHEATER HEADERS

Abstract
Cracking in the tubing and welds of the de-superheaters used aboard HMCS Preserver and Protecteur has been examined. The examination revealed that the premature failure of the stainless steel tubing occurred by stress corrosion cracking as a result of inadequate stress relief and/or sensitization resulting from heat treating problems. Porosity formed at the heel of welds. This porosity also contributed to tube cracking.
