DISPERSION ANALYSIS OF AN UNSTEADY FREE SURFACE PANEL METHOD

Abstract
A panel method for calculating three-dimensional unsteady free surface flows is analyzed to determine its numerical dispersion, damping, and stability. The panel method is an extension to three-dimensions of the method of Longuet-Higgins and Cokelet. Three surface singularity distributions are considered: sources only, dipoles only, and a mixed source-dipole distribution. It is found that a constant source distribution on each panel is the best. The method is marginally unstable to disturbances of wavelength twice the panel dimensions. The application of smoothing to remove the instability is also considered.
