Abstract
The theory of sound scattering from rough surfaces and inhomogeneous volumes is reviewed. Measured backscattering strengths are presented for open and ice covered sea surfaces, the ocean bottom, and biological scattering layers in the ocean volume. The measurements are discussed in terms of the relevant scattering mechanisms.
