FINITE ELEMENT METHODS FOR ANALYZING COUPLED FLUID/STRUCTURE SYSTEMS

Abstract
Computer codes have been developed at the Defence Research Establishment Atlantic (DREA) for the coupled analysis of elastic structures either filled with or submerged in a dense fluid. The computer codes are based on the finite element method and are used primarily to predict the natural frequencies of structures where fluid/structure interaction is important and are also capable of predicting resonances in rigid-walled cavities. This paper will outline the theoretical background and numerical implementation of the codes and provide illustrative examples.
