Abstract
Describes work performed on VASGEN, the VAST general purpose finite element model generation program which is based on a parametric cubic modelling technique. The geometric modelling capabilities have been enhanced through the addition of new features such as converting grid points from one coordinate system to another; and the generation of primitives from patches or hyperpatches. General enhancements in VAGEN include streamlining the program to eliminate unnecessary prompting; and the development of a program to generate a session file for cylinder to cylinder intersection models. Several finite element modelling improvements have also been made. Among the most notable are an improved method of defining the beam element local axis; nonuniform element spacing along all hyperpatch edges; reducing the total number of element groups by combining ranges of element groups; and graded meshing for patches.
