Abstract
The report describes the work carried out on three tasks under the title Five Bladed Frequency Determination. Task number one was the determination of the vibration frequencies of the QUEST five bladed propeller as a complete propeller including the five blades, hub and shaft. Task number two was to complete the development of and produce a user's manual for the ship hull finite element program SHPHUL. The third task was to produce a sample problem manual for the propeller finite element modelling program PVAST. Task 1 achieved the objective of predicting the effect of shafting on the vibration modes of a five blade monobloc propeller. Because of software problems the effect of added fluid mass could not be included. Part 2.1 of Task 2 was completed except for upgrading the manual. A good start was made on part 2.2 of Task 2 which was seriously hampered by the unreliability of the FPS processor and the current limitations of the program REFINE. In Task 3 flaws in the PVAST software seriously limited the ability to demonstrate all the options for propeller modelling.
