REPLACEMENT OF FREON TF™ IN THE ULTRASONIC CLEANING OF LUBE OIL FILTERS AT SRU(A) (SHIP REPAIR UNIT ALTANTIC)

Abstract
The results of an evaluation of potential replacement solutions for Freon TF (TRADEMARK) used for the ultrasonic solvent cleaning of sintered monel lube oil filter wafers are presented. The solutions evaluated were a 10% aqueous solution of Chesterton 801 Industrial and Marine Solven (TRADEMARK), a 3% aqueous solution of Deanco 131 (TRADEMARK) (sodium hydroxide) and the aliphatic hydrocarbon mixtures Chesterton 274 Industrial Degreaser (TRADEMARK) (flash point 60C) and Axarel 9100 (TRADEMARK) (flash point 90C). The evaluation compared the performance of the test solutions to Freon TF (TRADEMARK) in terms of rinseability and content of organic and inorganic soils. Acceptable cleaning performance was considered to be no less than that achieved by Freon TF (TRADEMARK). The evaluation indicated that the flash aliphatic hydrocarbon mixture, Chesterton 274 Industrial Degreaser (TRADEMARK), performed best. However any aliphatic hydrocarbon mixture of the same fraction as the tested commercial product should perform equally well.
