AN IMPROVED LONG-TERM PITCH ANGLE ESTIMATOR FOR MICROPILOT

Abstract
Micropilot is a digital autopilot used for the autonomous guidance and control of unmanned flight vehicles. Its sensor suite includes triads of strapdown inertial angular-rate sensors and linear accelerometers, and air data sensors to measure the ambient and dynamic air pressure. To facilitate the use of low cost rate sensors in the attitude and heading reference system (AHRS), it is necessary to reduce the effect of rate sensor drifts and biases by incorporating long-term estimates of the roll, pitch and heading angles into the AHRS estimates. This Memorandum describes an algorithm for generating improved long-term estimates for the pitch angle, and compares its performance to the simple algorithm used previously.
