A LINEAR DILATOMETER FOR USE WITH POLYMERIC MATERIALS

Abstract
An automated precision dilatometer has been developed for the measurement of the glass transition temperature and the linear thermal expansion coefficient of polymeric-based composite propellants and explosives over a temperature range of -130oC to +80oC. Care has been taken to ensure precise calibration and to eliminate thermal asymmetries or undue mechanical forces on the test sample. Test results of a typical ammonium perchlorate/polybutadiene propellant are presented to illustrate measurement and computational techniques. Modifications being incorporated in an improved mode are previewed.
