Abstract
DREV work on gun wear control for the past 15 years is reviewed. Efforts were devoted to the use of additives which produce a cool boundary layer along tube walls. Liners, made of polyurethane foam, were developed and tested in large calibre guns such as 17 pr, 20 pr, 90 mm. The application of such liners being almost impossible in small arms, talc additives were incorporated directly into the propellant composition. Results demonstrated that although this arrangement was effective against erosion it also reduced ballistic performance.
