ON THE NECESSITY FOR MODELLING SUBMARINE PROPELLER TRANSVERSE FORCES DURING SIMULATIONS OF HIGH SPEED MANEUVERS

Abstract
The transverse forces generated by submarine propellers in strong crossflows are examined for their effect on depth keeping during high speed horizontal plane maneuvers. Experimental measurements of the forces are used to generate simulation coefficients which properly model the forces. These measurements are also compared with numerical predictions of the transverse forces. The forces are shown to influence depth strongly, but are not of concern to simulations which maintain depth by constantly trimming control surfaces in response to current conditions.
