THE ASYMPTOTIC EXPANSION OF AN INTEGRAL THAT OCCURS IN THE ANALYSIS OF A NARROWBAND DETECTOR

Abstract
During the numerical computation of the probabilities of detection and false alarm for a narrowband detector that employs long-term spectral averaging, it is necessary to compute accurately the characteristic function of a certain random variable. In this memorandum, an integral representation of this characteristic function is used to develop an asymptotic series for approximating the function. The asymptotic results are shown to agree very well with those obtained by Gauss-Laguerre quadrature of the integral, thereby verifying their correctness.
