INTEGRATION OF THE WAVE RESISTANCE GREEN FUNCTIONS OVER PLANAR PANELS

Abstract
The suite of programs POTFLO calculates the potential flow about a ship hull. The POTFLO programs have recently been extended to account for the free surface wave pattern caused by the ship. For this purpose the Rankine source distribution over the hull is replaced by a distribution of Kelvin/Havelock sources. This document describes the algorithms used in POTFLO for evaluating the velocities induced by a distribution of Kelvin/Havelock sources on a planar panel. The Rankine terms are integrated in the standard manner as originally proposed by Hess and Smith. The double integral terms are integrated using Gaussian quadrature of Newman's polynomial expansion. Several methods are used for the single integral: when as integrand is highly oscillatory, contour integration is used to transform the integrand to a form which is better behaved; for sufficiently deep panels the contour integration is unnecessary and direct numerical quadrature is possible; finally, a one term multipole expansion is used for cases in which the integrand does not vary significantly over the panel.
