OPTICAL INTERSATELLITE LINK FOR CANADIAN APPLICATIONS

Abstract
The development of an experimental optical communication system for potential use in RadarSat, EHF Satcom and Space Based Radar is reviewed. The system is being designed to carry out comprehensive tests and to demonstrate the feasibility of this technology. The system is to support communication rates of up to 100 Mb/s using intensity modulation with direct detection. Provisions are made to upgrade the system to 1 Gb/s using either wavelength multiplexing or heterodyne detection. AlGaAs laser diodes, emitting at 830 nm, were selected for the optical source. The telescope is a periscope type with a 13.6-cm aperture. The acquisition and tracking sub system is to tolerate a 5-milliradians acquisition uncertainty and a 1-microradian tracking accuracy with a 6-microradians communication beam. The system is designed around current technology with space qualifiable techniques.
