OPTICAL CONTROL OF THE TRANSMIT SECTION OF A PHASED ARRAY ANTENNA

Abstract
Phased-array (PA) antennas are being actively investigated for space borne applications. Such antennas offer the flexibility to handle rapid beam steering for high gain and beam nulling for protection against jamming. However, they present some demanding requirements for on-board processing and signal distribution not found in conventional antennas. Optical techniques using electro- and integrated- optics components and fiber optics could be used to implement these requirements. In this paper, some of those optical techniques that are suitable for signal conditioning and signal processing for applications in PA spacecraft antennas in support of EHF communications and remote sensing systems are described.
